On February 6, 2027, Chile will be one of the best places in the world to witness an annular solar eclipse — the so-called “ring of fire” — when the Moon covers nearly 96% of the Sun, leaving a thin luminous ring visible around it.
A ring of fire over the Carretera Austral
The best-visibility band crosses Chilean Patagonia: the Chiloé archipelago and parts of the Los Lagos and Aysén regions, along the Carretera Austral. Futaleufú will be one of the prime viewing points — there, the annularity phase could last close to 7 and a half minutes, one of the longest durations in the world for this phenomenon — along with Chaitén, Palena, Quellón, Chonchi, and Castro.
Why it pays to book ahead
Access to these areas is limited — few roads cross the annularity band — and the hotel capacity in these Patagonian towns is small relative to the international demand this kind of event draws years in advance.
