We went to Pucón for three days, Friday to Sunday, as guests of Hotel Casa Solaria. It may sound like an express trip, and it was, but it was enough to cover the destination without rushing and to come back with an even clearer idea of how it all fits together.
Pucón has an advantage few Chilean destinations share: everything is close. The volcano, the lakes, the rivers, the native forest and the hot springs are all within short distances, so once travelers are there they do not spend much time on the road. That completely changes how much can be done in three or four days.
The trip in figures
- Length: three days, Friday to Sunday.
- Base: Hotel Casa Solaria, facing Pucón’s main square.
- How we got there: flight to Temuco and a private overland transfer to the hotel.
- Category: four-star superior with a boutique feel.
- What we did: hot springs, snowshoeing, the volcano’s lower slopes, panoramic viewpoints and Salto El León.
Friday: arrival and the whole destination in one room

We flew into Temuco early and landed a few minutes before ten in the morning. Our transfers were already waiting at the airport, so we headed straight to Pucón, around 80 minutes away. The hotel faces the square and that pays off: we had early check-in, dropped the bags and were within walking distance of everything. For anyone who does not book early check-in the benefit ends up being the same, since they can head straight out to the dozens of restaurants and cafés around the hotel.
The afternoon was the most useful part for us in terms of finding local operators. The hotel set aside one of its function rooms and brought in local tour operators and suppliers to present their offering, one after another. The hotel organised the trip, yet it understands something key: a destination sells as a whole, not supplier by supplier. Pucón presented itself as an established destination, with partnerships and players across every link of the operating chain.
For dinner we went to a local Italian restaurant, the kind you do not expect to find in a southern town and that ends up being the topic of conversation the next day.
Saturday: everyone on their own, then all to Salto El León

We split into three groups. One went to the hot springs. Another headed out on snowshoes. The third hiked the volcano’s lower slopes. We were all back by lunchtime, which is exactly the advantage of a destination where activities are close at hand.

In the afternoon we met up again and drove to Salto El León, a welcoming complex of hot tubs and a café set below the impressive waterfall. We spent a relaxed afternoon in the wooden tubs, right in front of the falls, and afterwards stayed at the café over a good coffee, while others went for sparkling wine to toast the view.
At night we closed with a barbecue and a team dinner at a bar, where the liveliest among us ended up at a local karaoke. We walked back to the hotel, which is another big point in its favour.
The hotel: what it is and what it is not
Casa Solaria is not a luxury hotel and does not claim to be. It is a four-star superior property with a boutique feel: comfortable, warm, well run, and at a rate that leaves room to build a full program around it. The location on the square and the team’s willingness to help us link up the destination are worth as much as the room itself.
We put it in those terms because that is where it genuinely works: travelers looking for a comfortable, well-located base to head out from every day, rest properly each night and start with a full breakfast. For those who pay attention to these things, there are some excellent desserts if they manage to catch them.
How we recommend selling Pucón
The destination works especially well combining self-drive for getting around with adventure travel run by certified local operators. Distances are short, the main roads are in good condition and travelers can drive from one activity to the next without depending on scheduled transfers. On top of that you add guided excursions where they are needed: the volcano, rafting and snowshoe outings require an operator, and that is where the solid network we have, and have now put to the test, comes in. It also works as one piece of a longer itinerary, combined with some of the all-inclusive properties in the area.
Worth keeping on hand
- Recommended format: self-drive with guided excursions where appropriate.
- Length: three nights minimum; four or five cover the destination without rushing.
- Traveler profile: couples, families with older children and groups needing different levels of effort on the same day.
- Needs a local operator: volcano ascent, rafting, snowshoeing and scenic flights.
- Can be done independently: nearby waterfalls, hot springs, the lake beaches and the town itself.
